This historic relic was originally built by the Aztec people to trace their complex cosmology. With the level of intricate detail present on this silver replica, the fact that multiples stack perfectly on top of one another is all the more impressive.
Following the arrival of Cortes in Mexico, the Aztec Empire met its swift, violent end. The Aztec Sun Stone, which historians believe was never actually finished, got buried in what is currently Mexico City. Then in 1790, it was uncovered and placed on the Mexico City Cathedral walls, where it resided for almost a century. Today, you can see this historic artifact in the National Anthropology Museum in Mexico City.
