The Idaho 1/2 Goldback celebrates Sacagawea as Pietas, representing the virtue of devotion. Born near Lemhi Pass, Sacagawea played an important role in the Lewis and Clark Expedition, helping guide the explorers along the Lolo Trail in 1805 while traveling with her infant son.
Goldbacks combine the familiar size and flexibility of traditional paper currency with thin layers of 24-karat gold. First introduced in Utah following the Utah Legal Tender Act of 2019, Goldbacks are designed as a voluntary form of local currency that participating businesses and individuals may choose to accept. The concept has since expanded into additional states, with Idaho becoming the eighth state to introduce its own distinctive Goldback series.
