1940 San Francisco Mint Cast Silver Bar 24.95 Troy Ounces
During the 1930s and 1940s, silver bars could be obtained from the San Francisco Mint either by purchasing them at their stated value or by submitting silver for assay and refining. This particular bar carries the desirable oval San Francisco Mint hallmark, featuring the inscription “MINT OF THE UNITED STATES AT SAN FRANCISCO” encircling a spread-wing eagle with a shield, branch, and arrows. By contrast, other varieties from the era display a round stamp reading “U.S. MINT SAN FRANCISCO.”
This bar is an exceptional and rare example, bearing Serial #462 and containing 24.95 ounces of .9995 fine silver. It retains strong, clearly defined stamping—unlike many pieces from this period that show only partial impressions. This bar is a truly outstanding historic mint ingot, preserving its rich, original natural patina.
